Experience
I attended Bob Jones University, where I earned my BA in History. As I had studied Mandarin Chinese in my high school senior year, I chose to move to China following my college graduation, and stayed for three years. As I learned about China, I also had the opportunity to teach spoken English at Jilin University of Finance and Economics. This experience taught me to use the most effective teaching styles for my students. I also received the Confucius Scholarship, which gave me the chance to study advanced Chinese at Northeast Normal University in China. I was able to learn Mandarin Chinese through daily exposure, and learned the culture by living among the Chinese people. It wasn't always easy, and now I really have a great time helping others face the challenges of learning Chinese, especially when they do not have the benefit of being immersed in the language and culture daily. I do tutor a number of other classes, especially in the humanities, such as history, geography, and government. I also enjoy helping students prepare for standardized tests such as the GRE. When I work with students on history, we study it as a story, rather than a dry memorization of dates, which really helps it come alive for them.
